Hypernatraemia

High sodium — causes, safe correction rate and fluid management

Hypernatraemia

Hypernatraemia is a serum sodium above 145 mmol/L, indicating relative water deficit. Most common in elderly, unconscious patients, or those with impaired thirst. Correction must be gradual (maximum 10 to 12 mmol/L per 24 hours) to avoid cerebral oedema.
